My Story

Dedicated to teaching and inspiring young people in performance.

Born in Victoria 1965, Ingrid started to play the piano at the age of four under the strict guidance of her older brother. She continued studies at the Victoria Conservatory of Music from 1971 to 1985 under the direction of Margaret Hendry,                   Winifred Scott Wood and Rena Sharon (Professor at UBC and CBC recording artist).

Mrs. Henderson received the AVCM Graduate Teacher Award in 1985, and is recognized by the Glenn Gould Professional School as a teacher with talented students.

She is highly revered as a teacher specializing in preparing young talent for solo and orchestral piano performance of all levels, and has been a faculty member of the Victoria Conservatory of Music since 1985.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Growing up in Victoria, Ingrid performed regularly in the Victoria Performing Arts Festival for many years where                           she consistently won numerous awards.

She performed for private clubs and events since 1985, and performed for H.R.H. Prince Edward CRVO in 1994. Ingrid also performed with her student at the Vancouver Recital Society master class for world-renowned pianist Murray Perahia in 1997.

Ingrid attended master classes with her student at the Zurich Conservatory in Switzerland with Professor Walter Prossnitz in 1999 and at the University of Toronto summer academy with International renowned Professor Marietta Orlov in 2007 and 2010.
Her students have had the privilege of receiving master classes with distinguished performing artists Murray Perahia, Stephen Hough, Anton Kuerti, Angela Cheng, Jane Coop, Jon Kimura Parker and Richard Glazier.

Many of her students have received distinguished awards from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto (RCM) and Victoria Conservatory of Music (VCM) examinations, including the Gold medal for highest mark in Canada for the ARCT performance diploma exam receiving marks of 95% and 96%. In addition, her students received numerous awards from the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival (including City of Victoria Silver Medallion and Roberto and Mary Wood Scholarship award) many represented Victoria in the BC Provincial Performing Arts Festival. They also participated in Richmond Music Festival, CMC National competition, CBC Up and Coming, and CBC West Coast Young Musicians Competition.

Ingrid’s students were accepted as students at Julliard in New York, Manhattan School of Music, and the National Arts Centre of Music in Ottawa under the direction of maestro Pinchas Zukerman and the International Morningside Bridge Music summer program in Calgary. One of her students also received master classes from Zhang Jin, a teacher of international acclaimed pianist, Lang Lang.

Ingrid’s students were invited to perform with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra on numerous occasions, also the Victoria Cathedral Festival Orchestra, the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra and many other orchestras as well as solo performances on CBC Radio 2 and local television broadcasts.


In 1996, 1997, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014 ,2016, and 2017. Ingrid’s students performed with the Victoria Symphony at “Symphony Splash” reputed to be Canada’s largest outdoor orchestral event to audiences of over 40,000.

Ingrid has produced an impressive number of students all of whom have excelled in performance at many prestigious functions, including Government House, Victoria during the official residencies of Vice – Regal Officers:
The Honourable Garde Gardom, Q.C. The Honourable Iona V.Campanolo, PC, CM, OBC, The Honourable Steven L. Point, OBC. The Honourable Judith Guichon, OBC. Also special events and galas in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, H.R.H. Prince Edward CRVO, Prime Minister Jean Chretien, their Excellencies The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson and David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, many other Provincial, National and International dignitaries. Also, in 2014 for David Foster at the opening of the David Foster Foundation Theatre,Oak Bay Beach Hotel, Victoria.

In October 2002, Ingrid Henderson was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal for her dedication to teaching and inspiring young people in performance throughout the community.   Ingrid was the recipient of the 2004 Arts Leader of the Year CFAX Community Award.

​

Mrs. Henderson is now accepting new students at all levels.
